Self-driving cars are equipped with an AI system that utilizes algorithms, machine learning, neural networks, and computer vision for object detection, real time decision making driving, and navigation. These company’s systems use multiple sensors like LiDAR, cameras and radar which help in monitoring the surroundings and predicting the actions of other vehicles and pedestrians. Tesla, Waymo, and Cruise, for example, introduced AI-operated vehicles with minimal human manipulation for safer and more effective driving.
Yet, there remain unanswered issues with ethical dilemmas in emergencies, sudden road changes, and regulations with fully autonomous vehicles. AI cannot easily solve these complex problems that require human level reasoning, such as distinguishing between hazards in the road and understanding ambiguous traffic lights. Rapid advancement in AI-enabled vehicles is more accurate, but many still only serve the purpose of an advanced driver support system, rather than fully self-driving. Self-driving cars are not expected to be common in every day life until further research, practical testing, and regulatory changes are made.
