MSc Chemistry is a postgraduate program which aims at enhanced understanding of advanced chemicals, and principles associated with its application. Core subjects include organic chemistry which includes reaction mechanisms and stereochemistry, and natural products. Also included is inorganic chemistry dealing with coordination compounds, bioinorganic chemistry, solid state chemistry, and physical chemistry which includes thermodynamics, quantum mechanics, and spectroscopy. Analytical chemistry focuses on instrumental techniques which include chromatography, mass spectrometry, and electrochemical analysis.
In addition to the above, there is also the study of biochemistry, nanotechnology, environmental chemistry, and industrial chemistry. Research methodology, in addition to computational chemistry, is equally covered since it promotes students’ experiential and analytical skills. Areas of specialization such as polymer chemistry, medicinal chemistry, and the materials science have elective subjects. The course incorporates also the laboratory work, project based, and dissertation research in solving problems critically which prepares graduates for academic, pharmaceuticals, and industrial research position.
