Students who complete the Auxiliary Nursing Midwifery (ANM) diploma program receive training for two years followed by six months of internship. This program provides students with training to become qualified basic nurses and midwives who deliver community healthcare services. Graduates obtain competence in primary medical care by studying maternal and child health and nutrition together with first aid and infection control at the coursework. The Indian Nursing Council (INC) authorized this program along with other healthcare organizations for recognition.
The educational foundation of ANM graduates enables them to deliver key healthcare services in primary prevention and promotion and restoration activities. These nurses find employment at hospitals along with nursing homes and community health centers and NGOs. Through the training program students master skills to support doctors and senior nurses in the delivery of childbirth services and immunization programs and conducting family welfare programs. Following ANM graduation students can advance to studies at GNM (General Nursing and Midwifery) level or B.Sc. Nursing to obtain improved career opportunities. Currently there exists a significant employment market for ANM professionals because the world requires increased healthcare services.
