B.Sc Agriculture is a wide-ranging programme that prepares students for a career in agriculture, farming and agricultural research. It begins with the fundamental courses in soil science, agronomy and crop production. The students learn about the different types of soils, their management and the different crops that can be grown.
In addition to the core agricultural subjects, the program also includes plant pathology, entomology and genetics as applied to plant breeding. These subjects cover considerable ground in crop pests and disease management and the modification of plants for better yield. Students also learn about horticulture which deals with growing fruits, vegetables and flowers. Also important is agricultural economics and farm management that provide insights into the market, agricultural policies, and economic choices. Agricultural engineering is also about the study of all the machinery, tools, and advanced stimulants to farming.
Other subjects may include agricultural biotechnology, irrigation management, and sustainable agriculture focusing on the minimum impact on the environment and maximum resource use efficiency. There is always need for practical work through fieldwork and internship as this makes the theoretical work applicable to real world farming situations.
